Winter is literally melting away. The white snow is now a muddy mess. But I’m beginning to see little bits of green popping through in all the right places.
Our Chicago winter was mild until February blew in with approximately one million inches of snow. I exaggerate but it sure felt like that. At one point in mid February, we had nine consecutive days of snowfall…getting 18 inches of snow in just one storm. Our backyard looked like a swimming pool of snow. And I was fearful of flooding. The kids got lost in the winter wonderland when they ventured out with the sitter.
But then last week, it started to warm up a little. We had a day or two of 50*. And the green started to bloom. The gray snow began to melt and I could see the brown grass begin to make its annual transition to spring green.
Everyone’s mood seems to be lightened by this. I wore a kelly green cardigan to work the other day and someone complimented me saying to brought her so much joy to see some brighter colors. My mood lifts each day as the sun shines on my way to work highlighting the tiny green buds on the trees. My kids are beginning to notice the longer days and want to stay up just a little later…one of the only downfalls of this early spring.
I pray it is not a false start. Chicago is known to trick us into the Spring of Deception. But I am ready to see the flowers and get some vitamin D in some other way than my daily vitamin. They say the grass is always greener on the other side. But when it comes to Spring, that statement is about as true as it gets.
I Love this Slice and Five Minute Fridays!!!! I will try that next week for sure!
We are definitely in Spring of Deception….I only hope we reach true Spring by Spring Break!!!

I like five minute Fridays because it gives me some direction after a long week.
Where I am in California, it feels like we only have two seasons.
The first, Summer.
The second, Wicked Witch of the West. You know, because everyone acts like they’re melting in the rain.
Seriously, we don’t know how to do seasons here.

Ah. Yes. We have first rain and first snow where everyone forgets how to drive—like they both don’t happen all the time here!
I always think that meme is too funny and so true. I’ve also seen one that includes “mud season” lol, which we definitely had going on last week as the snow started to melt!
I also love your “approximately 1 million inches of snow.” I definitely think that is a very accurate measurement of how much we got 🙂
One million for sure.
I loved your blog! I live in Michigan with the same mild winter until the cold winter and snow. day after day. In February! And yes I do love to finally see green grass again! My favorite part of your blog was your list of seasons at the end. That was hilarious! Snd so very true! I really liked your photos also.

Thank you so much for reading.
I love love love the 12 seasons of Chicago! See, you are so much tougher than we mere Jersey girls with our occasional 2 foot storms, hahaha! Your post is wonderful and I love the idea of Five Minute Friday. Green is a good word to use! Go Green!!!
I was JUST talking to a co-worker about Spring Deception! I am SO tempted to put away all-things-winter… But I can’t… It’s only Spring Deception! haha! Very vivid and detailed writing!
