I often blame myself when things go wrong. Don’t we all? I don’t know if it is a mom thing or a woman thing or a human thing. But I’ll tell you what. I don’t often see a dad blaming himself for not foreseeing that their kid was going to need new shoes for Easter.

But with as often as I blame myself—how often am I thanking myself? NEVER
Blame myself for forgetting to defrost the chicken.
Never thanking myself for figuring out a way to feed my family anyway.
Blame myself for forgetting to send that one email.
Never thanking myself for sending the 50 others that went out that day.
Blame myself for not having the kids’ favorite mac & cheese on hand.
Never thanking myself for having all their other favorites available and ready to go.
Blame myself for not finishing that book club book.
Never thanking myself for getting the rest my body needed rather than staying up too late to finish.
Blame myself for having a house that is in need of a good cleaning before hosting Easter.
Never thanking myself for planning and preparing an Easter celebration to begin with.
So today is the day I start adding a thanks for every blame so I can better see all I do rather than just all I don’t.

I don’t blame myself when things go bad,
for I’m too cool to be at fault,
and that might make some people mad,
but I tell them to act adult
and see the Elvis side of me,
and when they do, oh, what a rush
that sets them rocking out and free,
thank you very very much!
And anyway, blame is a bummer
that doesn’t really solve a thing,
so I think this coming summer
you should pay homage to the King
and make each day a happy find
with no suspicion in your mind.

True that… but we can’t always fix it either. So we can blame ourselves, and then shake off the dust and move forward. FMF14

Good point – we should probably be more balanced and not so hard on ourselves all the time. Especially over the daily stuff of life. Visiting from FMF#16

oh! Fascinating! I saw it as a passing-the-buck blaming and rarely hear people blaming self, except falsely. You are right. How often do we commend ourselves or others for all the things we and they do right? Thank you.
