Wednesdays are SO busy for us. At work, I have 2 weekly back-to-back department meetings starting at 9:30. My oldest has a standing Wednesday appointment at 4. My two boys typically have Scouts at 6. My middle guy had basketball practice at 6:30 until recently. And one special Wednesday a month, I have my larger department meeting at 2:45.
Today was that day.
The plan was for me to pick up McDonald’s on the way home so the kids could chow it down before heading their respective ways.
At 6am I saw the email that my daughter’s standing appointment was cancelled. At 6:45am I saw the text that Scouts was cancelled. Then I remembered that basketball ended last week. Our evening suddenly opened up and McDonald’s was not necessary but I certainly didn’t want to make dinner.
I texted my husband. His answer was immediate.

We are lucky to have one of the last remaining Baker’s Squares around. At its peak, there were over 200 restaurants. Now there are only seven left in the US with some other pie only locations inside other establishments. And we happen to have one almost in our corner.
We go there semi-regularly…most notably on Free Pie Night. For under $60 (plus tip), all five of us can eat dinner and take home pie! Barely a scrap of dinner was left on our plates before heading home to enjoy some pie at our own kitchen table. Everyone got their old favorites or tried something new. We were all happy campers.

I am writing for the 19th annual Slice of Life challenge presented by Two Writing Teachers.

When unexpected time shows up, order the pie!
