SOL25: 30 family time

Family days are the best days. After packing up we started the drive to the resort. I only heard, are we there yet one time. We were exactly 3 minutes from Great Grandpa’s house filling up the fast tank.

As always, we arrived early in hopes our rooms would be ready.

Lucky us! They were for the first time ever!!

We unloaded the car and met Great Grandpa for lunch. Aaron took the kids to the pool while I pick up the grocery order. This time we did something a little different and got the biggest room we could. We have an actual bedroom for Aaron and I, the boys are upstairs in the loft, and McKenna is camping out in the living room with the sofa bed and a fireplace.

I was able to make it back in time to watch the kids swim. I judged a million jumps and timed a bunch of cross pool swims. My kids are fish. they could spend all day and night in the pool.

Those swim lessons are FINALLY paying off.

But exhaustion and hunger won out so we made our way back to our room. What was nice since we got the much bigger suite, is that we have a kitchenette. Although I love to not cook dinner. I love overtired and famished kids not screaming at a restaurant more. I had planned for this. A simple supper of Cesar salad, pasta with red sauce, Italian sausage, and fresh bread is just what everybody needed.

After dinner, McKenna escorted Great Grandpa to his room to retire for the evening. She returned with a package of Double Stuffed Oreos…that man knows the way to my children’s hearts.

We busted out the games and played a couple of competitive rounds of Taco vs. Burrito and Mancala. There were some sore losers, but overall, it was so nice to just relax with the kids. No TVs, no phones, no distractions. We just hung out. We never get to do this anymore. We are usually slaves to an overbooked calendar that there is just no time to enjoy each other’s company.

We spoiled ourselves with the bigger room. I’m not sure I’ll be able to go back to our regular lofted room after having all this extra space. Honestly, my anxiety and near dread of this trip is fading away now that we aren’t all on top of each other. I am usually trying to figure out what restaurants at which times will meet everyone’s standards while dragging wet cranky kids out of the pool. Today I was able to head back and make a quick meal in peace. Tomorrow we will have breakfast in the room and I’ll make sandwiches to eat by the pool for lunch. We will head out for dinner but after a full day of swimming, they will likely be ready.

Dare I say that I may enjoy this trip?!

I just snapped a single picture today of McKenna and me while we were relaxing by the pool.

I am writing for the 18th annual Slice of Life challenge presented by Two Writing Teachers.

It sounds like you found the perfect balance for this vacation! I hope it continues to be relaxing for everyone! Trying to my son to eat strange restaurant food at every meal has definitely spoiled some vacations for me! A separate grown-up room, a kitchenette, a pool, and a stack of games sounds like a perfect vacation!
