SOL24: bedtime snacks

Do you have a go-to bedtime snack? My boys like a string cheese or a yogurt drink. My husband will grab a piece of fruit if he is hungry. McKenna will gobble down some crackers. She will devour a whole box of Wheat Thins or Ritz if I don’t stop her.

Are you team salty or sweet?

Me? I’m team salty all the way. Actually, I prefer salty to sweet for most things. Give me a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos any day of the week. I cannot be trusted around an open bag. I won’t stop eating them until I hit bottom.

Ok. Ok. Like mother like daughter I guess.

Don’t even get me started about the time many years ago when Aaron and my dad finished off a family sized bag of NCD I had been saving for my VERY PREGNANT self. Aaron tried to replace them with a couple gas station Big Grab bags of Cool Ranch. 🤮 Do they even sell Big Grab size anymore?

As if Cool Ranch is a suitable replacement for your pregnant wife’s Nacho Cheese craving. 🙄

We FOUGHT {capital F} over this monumental error on their part. I yelled at my dad and Aaron both and gave them the silent treatment for days. How could they do such a thing? To a pregnant woman? For shame.

Cool Ranch sucks. I said what I said. And, NO. I will not be elaborating.

This story always comes up when we have Doritos in the house. Aaron will continue to be wrong no matter how many years have passed. Nine years have passed in case you are wondering. I will continue to accept zero responsibility for the entire situation because…pregnancy hormones. No apologies on my part were given. None ever will be. Please see above.

VERY occasionally, a bowl of Cheerios will sound amazing. Did you know that eating a lot Cheerios could be a sign of iron deficiency? Someone told me that once. But when I looked it up on the Google, it was inconclusive so I’m guessing it’s just an urban legend.

The other night I wanted just a little something before I settled in and scrolled myself to sleep. I wandered to the kitchen and found just what I didn’t know I wanted. I grabbed the peanut butter, a banana, a couple of slices of leftover bacon and the butt of the bread.

Yes. If you are wondering, I made a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich—Elvis style.

If you haven’t had one before, I suggest you do next time you have some leftover bacon hanging around the fridge. I know. Leftover bacon? It’s weird to have such a thing. But I had 2 slices from our grilled cheese and tomato soup the other night just waiting to be used up. It was meant to be.

This is truly a don’t-knock-it-til-you-tried-it kind of situation. It’s salty and sweet while having some crunch. My preferred bread is a good sour dough or a hearty white—not the squishy kind. Save that for your bologna & cheese sandwiches. For some reason I like the butt of the bread. Maybe it’s because it’s always available but I do feel it adds a little something.

So. I ask again. Salty or sweet? Do you have a go-to?

that looks like a great snack but never leftover bacon around here. And never the end of the bread. I’m on the sweet side, just a little taste like a 2 bite brownie or 1 cookie or a tablespoon of pie. First bites the best so why eat the rest…

I’m mostly a salty snacker. Like you, fill bags of chips or other salty snacks are no match for me. I do like sweet things sometimes but I won’t eat and eat and eat it. I’ll have an oreo or two and be done. But for chips or crackers (cheez it grooves are a favorite of mine), I have come to buying individual bags because I can’t be trusted with a big bag. Once it’s open it’s gone.

And I fully support your continued grudge about the doritos that got eaten. Even when not pregnant, if I bought something specifically for me and was expecting it to be there, I get MAD if someone eats it. Add in being pregnant, and forget about it. It’s war!

Karyn, what a fun post! Sadly, I am a sweet and salty snacker. I love them all! Usually though, for a bedtime snack, I am a popcorn person with a cup of herb tea. That’s pretty routine for me. Snacking the rest of the day–I do like fruit. But if its available, junk food is always a favorite–sweet or salty. Yikes! That’s why I don’t buy it when it’s just me and my husband at home.
