28SOL24: TS strikes again

Her birthday is in a week and a half. She’s been planning her party for almost a year. Seriously…since her last birthday at the roller rink. I think she came home and started looking up party ideas for her pre-double digit celebration.

McKenna’s 8th birthday party at the roller rink just before the closed forever

We had ideas for a spa party, pool party, movie party. Then there was the game party and the dance party ideas. Of course, a bunny themed idea was considered. She finally settled on something through the park district. It’s a tie-dye party with a Taylor Swift twist…a little TS inspiration if you will.

Lucky for me we just need to bring our music and food. The park district does the rest including providing all the materials for and leading of the tie-dye t-shirt project. They even the plates and napkins. I though I had nothing else to do.

It started out with the invitation. Maybe we could do something a little special for that. That wouldn’t hurt. Right? Then McKenna started brainstorming.

How about little microphones, Mom?
Or we can do cool sprinkles for cupcakes.
Maybe we can have brownies and cupcakes!
Oooh! And a custom shirt!

Here I was planning to pick up some generic Walmart cupcakes and ordering Dominoes but things have…progressed. I thought the Eras set list…clean version, of course…would suffice to fill the last hour of our time. Can you say dance party?! But apparently we need MORE.

THE set list—already downloaded

There are special heart shaped sunglasses from the Red era. Shes planned a DIY cupcake decorating bar with individual containers to bring them home because she actually wants to serve brownies. We found the perfect 1989 sprinkles to put into tiny containers each kiddo. There are Lover inspired bags for each guest to haul their loot home. We may toss in a DIY bracelet kit from Midnights to top it all off. But that’s mostly just because I have an over abundance of friendship making stuff from when I thought we would make them for the movie debut. Shockingly…we didn’t.

This has gotten out of hand. You know when someone plans a wedding with a long engagement and they end up going overboard with…everything? This feels just like that! But it is her pre-double digit birthday. And she’s my only little lady. And my oldest. And I just cannot say no when it clearly makes her so happy.

You only turn 9 once. But I am drawing the line at a life size Taylor cut out.

I’m not a complete pushover.

I am writing for the 17th annual Slice of Life challenge presented by Two Writing Teachers.

I love how you described how adding just “one” little something to make the party special snowballed. Some of my favorite moments from childhood involve working with my mom to plan out my birthday parties. I don’t remember much of the actual parties, but do remember lots of fun with my mom planning them. It sounds like you’re creating really special memories with McKenna. Hope it’s at least sort of fun for you as well.
