SOL21 Day 5: Five Minute Friday: green

Winter is literally melting away. The white snow is now a muddy mess. But I’m beginning to see little bits of green popping through in all the right places.

Our Chicago winter was mild until February blew in with approximately one million inches of snow. I exaggerate but it sure felt like that. At one point in mid February, we had nine consecutive days of snowfall…getting 18 inches of snow in just one storm. Our backyard looked like a swimming pool of snow. And I was fearful of flooding. The kids got lost in the winter wonderland when they ventured out with the sitter.

Our yard was FULL.

But then last week, it started to warm up a little. We had a day or two of 50*. And the green started to bloom. The gray snow began to melt and I could see the brown grass begin to make its annual transition to spring green.

My yard beginning to thaw revealing treasures buried by the snow.

Everyone’s mood seems to be lightened by this. I wore a kelly green cardigan to work the other day and someone complimented me saying to brought her so much joy to see some brighter colors. My mood lifts each day as the sun shines on my way to work highlighting the tiny green buds on the trees. My kids are beginning to notice the longer days and want to stay up just a little later…one of the only downfalls of this early spring.

I pray it is not a false start. Chicago is known to trick us into the Spring of Deception. But I am ready to see the flowers and get some vitamin D in some other way than my daily vitamin. They say the grass is always greener on the other side. But when it comes to Spring, that statement is about as true as it gets.

I am participating in FIVE MINUTE FRIDAY. Today’s word is green. The rules are simple. Write for five minutes flare. There is not extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, punctuation. It is unscripted. Unedited. Real.

  1. Where I am in California, it feels like we only have two seasons.

    The first, Summer.

The second, Wicked Witch of the West. You know, because everyone acts like they’re melting in the rain.

Seriously, we don’t know how to do seasons here.

  2. I always think that meme is too funny and so true. I’ve also seen one that includes “mud season” lol, which we definitely had going on last week as the snow started to melt!

I also love your “approximately 1 million inches of snow.” I definitely think that is a very accurate measurement of how much we got 🙂
