SOL 2020 27 with Five Minute Friday: adjust

We’ve had to adjust a lot over the past few weeks. A global pandemic with a state mandate to stay-put will do that.

Most adjustments were not the kind I wanted to make.

We’ve lost all sense of schedule even though I had one all planned out. It includes times for gross and fine motor activities for my kiddos as well as work time for myself. Limited screen time for all, of course. Yet this was way harder to follow than I expected.

So we adjusted.

We had to stop our weekly visits with Great Grandpa which really has broken my heart. Twice weekly babysitting by Regular Grandpa has dwindled down to only when mommy has an OB appointment.

So we adjusted.

Meal planning, list making and grocery shopping has been non-existent. Ordering what I need from Amazon and having it show up at my doorstep one to two days later is impossible. Target pickup for diapers is completely unavailable.

So we adjusted.

The alarm no longer goes off. Daycare schedules no longer need to be kept. The days have blended together to the point where I need to check a calendar on the daily. I can’t work with the intensity that I once did.

So we adjusted.

We now keep a schedule that works for us. I am ultra productive before the kids awake and during nap time. Between is a crapshoot. Screen time limits are set when I can no longer tolerate the background soundtrack of Disney Jr. or when we’ve lost the remote.

We now call Great Grandpa and Regular Grandpa as often as we can. I wing it while grocery shopping and pray I can get the necessities that Amazon and Target can’t deliver to my doorstep or car. We awaken when we want and I work when I can, putting in my best when I do.

It’s been an adjustment. And each new press conference or announcement is just another adjustment personally or professionally. In times of crisis, flexibility is key. My type A personality has been stressed by this. But I’ve also come to realize that we can only do what we can do.

No more.

No less.
